History of International Revolving Doors

Van Kannel Revolving Storm Door

In 1888 Theophilus Van Kannel, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was granted a patent for his unique revolving door design.  It was easy to pass through from either direction, could not be blown open by the wind even in a storm, and blocked street noise from entering the lobby of a building. He formed the Van Kannel Revolving Door Company, with his main office and manufacturing facilities on East 134th Street, in New York City.

Separately, in the 1880s, The Atchison Company had been formed in Atchison, Kansas. Later they began producing high quality revolving doors.

And in 1907, The International Steel Company was formed in Evansville, Indiana. International Steel began producing doors for Van Kannel, and this entity later acquired both Van Kannel and Atchison, moving all manufacturing to Evansville. By the mid-1930s the Ingleheart Family held a controlling interest in International Steel's operations.   (More Historical Information, from our 1942 Catalog)

Today, the International Revolving Door Company (IRD), originally formed as a division of International Steel, is honored to be known as not only the world's oldest and largest revolving door manufacturer, but also the highest quality.
